A Performance Depicting the Tumultuous Life of the Famous Mexican Artist
Born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican painter known for her many self-portraits and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico.
Written and directed by Cerritos College Spanish Professor Froylán Cabuto, I Am Frida Kahlo is an exhilarating Spanish-language performance that depicts the tumultuous life of one of the most influential female artists of the twentieth century. The presentation depicts a reincarnation of Frida Kahlo’s life that gives her a voice to tell her own, true story. The original show features live music, dance performances, and digital media elements, and recounts Kahlo’s alter-ego who becomes her own critic. The stage play explores the creative process by which she developed some of her most outstanding art pieces while touching on the social and political issues of her time.

Exposed to a pain that would have been impossible for most to endure: her tragic accident when she was only 18, followed by 32 operations culminating in the amputation of her leg shortly before her death. What set Frida apart is not her turbulent life, but an infallible creative spirit.
